Fish with Philip Krista for Atlantic Salmon
Fishing on the World Famous Teno River, Utsjoki, Finland
The Teno (Tana) River forms the northernmost border between Norway and Finland,
250 miles above the Arctic Circle, with the river and its tributaries having
more than 620 miles of river accessible to migrating salmon, many of them
in excess of 75 pounds. In fact, this is the location of the world record
Atlantic Salmon caught by Henrik Henriksen in 1928 at 79 pounds, 2 ounces.
The river supports the largest wild stock of Atlantic Salmon in the world
with somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 fish caught annually. The next big
peak is in 2010, so we're currently on an upswing in terms of number of fish
and size of fish. Thanks to the remote location and the multiple rivers to
fish, you can fish for myriad subspecies of Atlantic Salmon, Char and Brown
trout. This is spey rod water, with wind and big water, although if you prefer
to fish smaller tributaries and lakes, you can do that with a regular fly
rod.
The lodge, Lomakyla Valle, is about 3 miles outside of Utsjoki. A relatively
new lodge will accommodate 8 guests comfortably, and the food is spectacular.
A number of boats are available for hire. Few parties fly fish out of the
area, so your fly will most likely be the first seen by a particular fish.
Philip can help you to perfect your spey casting on a river where that next
cast might break the world's record.
